Growth of the blended diet - why training is required
Adoption in care settings and hospitals
The increasing hospital adoption of blended diets reflects a shift towards patient-centered nutrition support. However, challenges remain in ensuring consistency in implementation across NHS Trusts with many waiting for a dedicated policy for their Trust to be written and adopted, and training for staff to be completed.
If your Trust needs additional support, please feel free to contact the Wilbo’s Blends team.
Courses such as the Blended Diet Course for Healthcare Professionals by Wilbo’s Blends offer structured training on using blended diets in enteral feeding. These events cover the latest research, practical implementation strategies, and best practice guidance.
Clinical Acceptance
Healthcare professionals are supporting blended diets due to evidence of benefits, including improved gastrointestinal tolerance and enhanced quality of life.
Research findings suggest that blended diets can help reduce reflux, constipation, and diarrhea in tube-fed individuals, leading to high interest from healthcare teams and families alike.
British Dietetic Association (BDA) Guidance
In 2021, the BDA released a Practice Toolkit to support dietitians and healthcare professionals in safely implementing blended diets. This provides best practice guidance on hygiene, preparation, and administration. One of the Authors of this is part of the team delivering the Wilbo’s Blends training for healthcare professionals.
Research Initiatives
The BLENDS (BLended ENteral Diet Study) project, led by Professor Jane Coad and Dr. Sarah Durnan (University of Nottingham), has explored family experiences with blended diets. Their work has contributed to new guidance materials to help families navigate the decision-making process.
A 2023 systematic review in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics highlighted positive outcomes such as improved gastrointestinal symptom control and few reported adverse events. This adds to a growing body of evidence supporting the safety and benefits of blended diets.
The BLENDS project has produced resources to help families make informed decisions about food choices, preparation, and management of blended diets.
Wilbo’s Blends are part of the community developing courses to support healthcare professionals and parents in implementing safe and effective blended diets.
